Cultural remains of the Medieval period prevail, but some go back to Biblical times. <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>Rennes-le-Ch\u00e2teau<\/em><\/span> is situated in\u00a0the heart of the <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>Pays Cathare<\/em><\/span>,\u00a0with historic roots extending well over 2000 years.<br \/>\nThe reliability of reports from such a remote past is difficult to assess, leaving ample space for legends to prevail. The most viral legends involving Rennes-le-Ch\u00e2teau, however, are less than 50 years old<em>.<\/em>\u00a0Controversies and questions abound: What is historically sound or at least possible? What is based on stories that critics reject as unlikely or outright bogus? In any case, legends surrounding Rennes keep inspiring writers \u2013 and readers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Based largely on Pierre Plantard (de Saint-Clair), G\u00e9rard de S\u00e8de published\u00a0&#8220;<em>L&#8217;Or de Rennes<\/em>&#8221; in 1967, initiating a wave\u00a0that many have been riding since.<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;<em>The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0 by Michael Baigent, Richard Leigh &amp; Henry Lincoln became\u00a0a bestseller in 1982.<\/li>\n<li>Even though G\u00e9rard de S\u00e8de in 1988 corrected some of the exaggerated claims about Rennes-le-Ch\u00e2teau, unlikely stories keep appearing\u2026 Some\u00a0have great success, for instance<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;<i><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Woman_with_the_Alabaster_Jar\" title=\"The Woman with the Alabaster Jar\">The Woman with the Alabaster Jar<span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;<\/span><\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0<\/i>Margret Starbird <span>in 1993<\/span>, and<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;<i><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Da_Vinci_Code\" title=\"The Da Vinci Code\">The Da Vinci Code<\/a><\/i>&#8221; by\u00a0Dan Brown in 2003.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.leslabadous.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Cave-m\u00e9ditation-P1060726-sm-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"307\" height=\"230\" class=\" wp-image-604 alignleft\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.leslabadous.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Cave-m\u00e9ditation-P1060726-sm-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.leslabadous.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Cave-m\u00e9ditation-P1060726-sm-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.leslabadous.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Cave-m\u00e9ditation-P1060726-sm-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.leslabadous.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Cave-m\u00e9ditation-P1060726-sm.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 307px) 100vw, 307px\" \/> But whether Mary Magdalene really did spend part of her life in this area \u2013 possibly even with Jesus Christ, as some believe \u2013 or whether historians are right to dismiss such speculations: It is a fact that many visitors find spiritual strength in this area.
